Godfather of Harlem dramatises the story of Ellsworth ‘Bumpy’ Johnson, the notorious crime boss who returns to Harlem after a decade in prison to find his neighbourhood changed and his power challenged. Starring Forest Whitaker in the lead role, the series explores the intersection of organised crime, the civil rights movement and the shifting politics of 1960s New York. Created by Chris Brancato and Paul Eckstein, the show blends historical figures with fictionalised drama, including Bumpy’s complex relationship with Malcolm X. Across four seasons it builds a portrait of ambition, loyalty and survival in a rapidly changing America.

Godfather of Harlem premiered in 2019 and brought the story of Ellsworth ‘Bumpy’ Johnson to television, with Forest Whitaker leading the cast as the real-life Harlem crime figure. The series is set in the 1960s, a period of profound change in American cities and in the civil rights movement.
After ten years in prison, Bumpy returns to find his old territory controlled by the Italian mob and his community in the middle of a political awakening. The show follows his efforts to reclaim influence while navigating relationships with figures such as Malcolm X, played by Nigel Thatch, and the broader struggle for Black empowerment. Its blend of crime drama and historical context gives the series a distinctive identity within the genre.
Viewers and collectors are drawn to Godfather of Harlem for Whitaker’s performance and for the way it dramatises a lesser-known chapter of American history. The complete run across four seasons offers a sustained narrative arc, making the box set an appealing option for fans of period crime drama.
