Starring Thomas Brodie-Sangster as Jack Dawkins, the series blends medical drama with heist-style adventure and sharp period detail. Lady Belle Fox, played by Maia Mitchell, pushes Dawkins toward ambition while old accomplice Fagin draws him back toward the underworld. Across two seasons, the show explores loyalty, reinvention, and the pull of old habits against the promise of a new life.

The Artful Dodger takes one of Charles Dickens’ most memorable characters and gives him a bold new story. Set in 1850s Australia, the series follows Jack Dawkins, the former pickpocket from Oliver Twist, now working as a skilled surgeon in a colonial hospital while trying to leave his criminal past behind.
Thomas Brodie-Sangster leads the cast as Dawkins, with Maia Mitchell as Lady Belle Fox, the governor’s daughter whose medical ambitions match his own. Their dynamic drives much of the series, while David Thewlis brings a sly menace to Fagin, whose reappearance threatens everything Dawkins has built. The show mixes surgical drama, romance, and underworld intrigue with a lively period setting.
Viewers drawn to fresh takes on literary classics and character-driven period drama value the series for its wit and energy. It offers a distinctive spin on Dickens that feels both playful and grounded in historical detail.
