The Gilded Age is a period drama created by Julian Fellowes, the writer behind Downton Abbey. Set in New York City during the 1880s, it examines a society divided between established families and the newly wealthy industrialists eager to claim a place among them.
The story begins when Marian Brook, played by Louisa Jacobson, moves in with her aunts Agnes van Rhijn and Ada Brook, portrayed by Christine Baranski and Cynthia Nixon. Across the street, the ambitious Bertha Russell, played by Carrie Coon, pushes against the social barriers upheld by old money, while her husband George builds a railroad fortune. The series follows their households, friendships, and rivalries as the city’s social order shifts.
Viewers drawn to costume dramas appreciate The Gilded Age for its attention to historical detail and its large, well-defined cast. The collected seasons allow audiences to follow the overlapping fortunes of these families as the social landscape of the era continues to change.
