Frankenstein (2025) 1-Disc Set Blu-ray

Frankenstein is Guillermo del Toro’s adaptation of Mary Shelley’s novel, a story that has haunted popular culture since 1818. Victor Frankenstein, driven by grief and intellectual pride, assembles a living being from the dead and then recoils from what he has made. The creature who emerges is not a mindless brute but a conscious soul, capable of thought, longing and rage, and the tragedy unfolds from the moment his creator refuses to acknowledge him.

Del Toro approaches the material with the same care he has brought to his own tales of outsiders and monsters, drawing on gothic literature, German expressionist imagery and detailed practical design. The film examines themes of parental abandonment, scientific responsibility and the human need for companionship, giving the creature a voice and an interior life that many earlier adaptations overlooked. The production’s visual language and its sombre, romantic tone reflect a director working at the height of his powers.

For admirers of del Toro, of classic horror literature, and of adaptations that treat their source with genuine respect, this version of Frankenstein offers a rich and considered interpretation. It is a title that rewards repeat viewing and belongs in collections built around gothic cinema and literary adaptation.
